Bringing Joy In Every Cup ❄ Cool Treats For Hot Days ❄ Snow Stars Shaved Ice ❄

Origin Story
Why Snow Stars exists
Snow Stars is a local shaved ice business in Lansing - owned and operated by Ramon Vela, run out of Dimondale in Eaton County, and built around one stubborn idea: that shaved ice should taste like something you remember, not something you tolerate.
I'm Ramon, the owner. I named this business after my daughter - that's not a marketing line, it's just what happened. As a single father, I wanted to build something I could run on my own time. Something with heart that gave back to my community. And something that actually tasted as good as the shaved ice I had as a kid.
That last part is why we're here.

The MSU football player from Texas
That's an MSU football player driving 30 to 45 minutes for shaved ice. As an authentic shaved ice story goes, that's the one I think about most. It's why we keep doing what we do.

Man, I'm from Texas. This tastes just like home. Whenever I see where you're at, I make the trip.
You know you're doing something right when strangers go out of their way to find you.
A few summers back, a guy started showing up at our events around East Lansing. I noticed him because he kept appearing — at festivals, farmers markets, even a corporate gig 30 minutes from MSU. I finally asked him what was up.

The Approach
What an authentic shaved ice story tastes like
The first time I had real shaved ice, I was six years old, visiting my grandma in Texas. It blew my mind. Light, fluffy, sweet without being heavy — nothing like the snow cones I'd seen at fairs back home. I have never forgotten that taste, and honestly, nothing has ever quite compared to it since.
When I started thinking about a business, I kept coming back to that memory. There was no shaved ice in Greater Lansing that tasted the way I remembered. So I started making it myself.
I shave block ice the traditional way to get that softer, fluffier snow. I mix every syrup with 100% raw cane sugar — not corn syrup, not powder mixes — because that's the only way to get the depth of flavor I'm after. When fruit goes on top, I cut it that morning. That's the whole thesis.

How We Operate
A family owned catering Michigan business - not a franchise
Snow Stars is a family owned catering Michigan business. We're Latinx-owned, which is part of why our menu pulls from the flavors I grew up with - Mangonada with chamoy and Tajín, real coconut cream, fresh strawberries with condensed milk. That's not a diversity bullet point. It's where the recipes come from.
It also means a few things about how we operate that you won't get from a national franchise :

When you call Snow Stars, you talk to me. Not a call center. Not a regional franchisee.

There are no zip-code territories. If you're within about an hour of Lansing, we'll come to you.

Same-day response on most inquiries. The person who answers your email is the person who shows up at your event.
